About Us

We are a student organization located at Carnegie Mellon University (CMU). We have multiple programs and events throughout the year to engage the CMU community.

Mission & Vision

Facilitating Opportunities for Refugee Growth and Empowerment (FORGE) is a student organization that seeks to educate, empower, and enrich the lives of refugees in order to catalyze sustainable social change. FORGE works toward this mission by engaging in direct service with refugees resettled to Pittsburgh and by spreading awareness of refugee issues.

Shruti, President

Hi! I'm Shruti, the President of FORGE. I am passionate about empowering the refugee community of Pittsburgh so they can feel a sense of belonging in the U.S. By witnessing the struggle my parents have experienced after immigrating to the U.S. from India, I understand how difficult it can be to get accustomed to a completely new way of life, and I believe it's my social responsibility to make this transition easier and more welcoming to those who are new to our community. In my spare time, I am a mental health advocate, and I play guitar, sing, and write poetry.

Sabrina, Events Chair

Hi, I’m Sabrina Zafar, a sophomore majoring in Statistics and Machine Learning. I became interested in refugee rights as a first generation immigrant who saw the struggles refugees face firsthand. I serve as the Events Chair, and help coordinate events for refugee families and spread awareness on campus!

Adhiti, Design Chair

Hi! My name is Adhiti, and I'm currently a sophomore studying Human-Computer Interaction and Psychology, with a minor in media design. I'm passionate about design and using it as a tool for education and creating change. In my free time I like to paint and try new recipes.

How can you help?

FORGE provides two different ways in which volunteers can engage in direct service with the local refugee population: the in-home tutoring program and the SCCORE program.
